I have always believed that Madrid has great appeal when you look up, on the highest part of the buildings.
*
At the beginning of Calle Alcalá, close to where the Seville Metro station is, is the building of the former headquarters of BBVA, which is crowned by the sculptures of two chariots drawn by four horses.
*
The Bank of Bilbao, wanted to highlight with these impressive sculptures, the image of strength and power that banks had at the beginning of the last century.
*
These 2 sculptural sets of 25 tons in weight, were the work of the Basque sculptor Higinio Basterra and originally they were golden color, for their coating of brass with cloths of gold.
*
During the Spanish Civil War, these sculptures were covered with dark paint to prevent them from serving as a reference to the Francoist planes bombing Madrid.
*
It is also said that during the transport of his casting site in Bilbao to Madrid, one of these horses was lost, forcing Basterra to make the reverse journey, until finding the lost horse.
*
Today this building houses the Ministry of the Environment and Land Planning.
